Overheard on the 6 train

May 13, 2008 / by bronxlady

I was on my way to work yesterday, quietly reading my book when I overheard a conversation which peaked my interest.  They say fate happens when you least expect it.  I just happened to experience a moment of fate for a first time author.

A man sat next to a woman on the train and asked if she enjoyed reading science fiction.  I thought this odd.  She responded in saying that she enjoyed reading and that science fiction was not one of her favorites.  He in turn handed her a book.  Which he wrote.  His very first book.  He explained to her about the book and how he was interested in writing for many years.  I only caught part of this conversation due to teenagers swearing and listening to their Ipods at full blast.

The part that I did catch....

Her: I work at Barnes and Noble.

Him: I'm on my way there to see if they will sell my book.

Her: I'm a buyer for Barnes and Noble!

Him: Oh my god! Oh my god! Are you serious??

Her: Yes!! I will pass this along to the buyer who specializes in science fiction.

The exchange of information then occured.  It was great to start my day knowing that one person's life was about to change forever.  All because he sat next to the one person he needed to meet on his writing journey.  Amazing.

now.. that is either pure coincidence or pure fiction!

if its coincidence.. i must say that now establishes my belief of "work hard for the moment coz it will come and it will solely be your moment" ..

It is truly coincidence.  I'm trying to locate the book which this man handed to the woman.  If I find it, I will post it.  A true story indeed!
